The subject matter of History consists of the study of the attempts of human beings in the past to organize life materially and conceptually, individually and collectively. The study of history is thus a window into the past that provides understanding of the present-day, and guides on how individuals, nations, and the global community might develop in the future. Historical study instructs how societies came to be and examines cultural, political, social, and economic influences across time and space.
The thrust of the B.A. History Programme of the Department of History and Archaeology is aimed at:
Inculcating in the students a sense of national pride and patriotism, deriving from a sense of historical knowledge acquired from critical understanding of the philosophy of history and historiography, firmly planted in the contexts of Nigerian, African and global history.
Enabling students to be exposed to a wide range of written sources ranging from Ethnographic, Geographic, Anthropological, and Archaeological data, which gives them a thorough understanding of historical movements in Nigeria, Africa and the world.
Enabling students comprehend the historical forces which have shaped and are still shaping the lives of the peoples of Nigeria, Africa and the world.
Developing in the students a sense of commitment and capacity to consciously relate to forces shaping their lives.
Providing the students with advantages usually associated with historical training viz: critical and analytical faculties and balanced judgments which are particularly crucial in research, managerial and administrative responsibilities.
